Throwback Thursday: DIY X AFROPUNK 2K18
Throwback Thursday: AH! it seems like it was just the end of August, my family and I were packing to go to Brooklyn, NYC for the biggest summer festival of 2018! People flew, drove, bus, train from all over to experience the ambience of togetherness, self awareness, creativeness, and above embracing who they are. Never I have seen a group of people (nationality, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity) come together with so much love, compassion, acceptance for one another. From Tyler of Creator telling us to get off our phones to be present in the moment to Erykah Badu (fatbabybella) soulfully singing harmonic tunes from her early 90s’ album. In that moment, it was a sacred space, a sacred haven.
AfroPunk Festival is the place to be inspire by unique styles! Tutu, flower crowns, Kente cloth, headwraps, colorful hair, Maasai necklaces, tribal face paintings all up down the strip. Food trucks, pineapple drinks, dance competitions and VOGUING!
Let’s take a look on street style apparel with my client!
We flipped a $18 thrift store denim vest into a custom street style piece that could be easily run about $65 -$80 (give or take) using household products.
Long Story short: My client was not feeling the denim vest with the tacky patches in which we removed. There was a lot of hesitation, no’, and uncertainty about pulling the look. But with some encouragement , persuading, and shooting around some ideas, my client eventually accepted the challenge in recreating his look. And Let me add, he was really feeling himself at the festival with DIY denim vest and the traditional kente hat
The household products we used to create the street-style look were the following: household white paint, bleach, water, paintbrush, spoon, blow dryer, and lighter. I’ve diluted the bleach and used a plastic spoon to sprinkle the substance on the clothing article. We then blow dry the denim vest for a good 15 minutes. Next, the house paint was used to give a 3D effect/abstract design. Both my client and I came up with a slogan to fit the theme, objective that’s has been circulating for two to three years straight. Inspired by the Migos, We did a #FORTHECULTURE on the back of the denim vest to devise a statement. For the collar, We agree to do a burnout on the corner to add bit of coloration besides the whitewash bleach background. Well there you have it, your DIY street-style piece!
